A Yellow-rumped Warbler landed briefly on a Live Oak Tree branch and then rapidly fluttered away at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in South Florida.

 
 
 
 
 

This beautiful Roseate Spoonbill, a large wading bird with a distinctive spoon-shaped bill, forages for food in shallow marshes.  Seen at Black Point Wildlife Drive in Merritt Island, Florida, the species has a limited U.S.  Range in Florida and the Gulf Coast.

 
 
 
 
 

The Snowy Egret, an active feeder, has a black bill and legs, and yellow feet which separates it from all other White Herons.  Photographed January 17, 2006 at Green Cay Wetlands in South Florida.

The Tricolored Heron is a very active species, extremely long-necked and long-billed. This wading bird walks slowly with neck outstretched, striking downward with bill to spear fish in shallow water, photographed in Wakodahatchee Wetlands in South Florida on March 21, 2004.

 
 
 
 
 

The Mottled Duck, closely related to the Mallard, has a dark body with pale markings on most body feathers and a black spot on olive-drab to yellow bill. Wakodahatchee Wetlands is a key bird wintering area in South Florida, where this dabbling duck was photographed in February 2006.

 
 
 
 
 

 This species, the Purple Gallinule, has blue-green wings and a blue body and head.  The Adult Purple Gallinule has a pale blue shield on its head between eyes and a red beak with a yellow tip.  They can usually be seen walking on floating vegetation or climbing through brush, rather than swimming.  This photo was taken at Green Cay Wetlands in South Florida on March 30, 2006.

The unique Osprey is a highly specialized species of Raptor, feeding exclusively on fish. Raptors are very aerial and soar for long distances in search of food.  This Osprey captured his fish in Lake Loran in South Florida by hovering, then plunging feet first into the water, on February 23, 2006.

 
 
 
 
 

 The Hooded Merganser, wintering in small flocks in Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida is a distinctive duck that I photographed on March 28, 2005.  This adult male has a unique "hammerhead" crest (black and white) with two black spurs on its chest and a thin black bill.

 
 
 
 
 

Adult Wood Storks are wading birds, over 3 feet tall with a wingspan of over 5 feet.  Seen here on January 13, 2006 at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Florida, Wood Storks are easily distinguished by their dark featherless heads, stout bills and white plumage trimmed with black.  The Federal Government listed the species as endangered in 1984.

 The Brown Pelican, with trademark bill, is found along the ocean shores and bays. Wingspan is about 6 1/2 feet and was seen at Sailfish Marina, Singer Island, Florida this flying pelican exhibits a relaxed, gliding flight, caught in photo on February 12, 2006.

 
 
 
 
 

The Tricolored Heron is an active hunter, often chasing prey with wings upraised, as photographed on July 17, 2005 at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in South Florida.

 
 
 
 
 

The striking American Avocet found here in a shallow, marshy pond at Black Point, Merritt Island, Florida.  This elegant species has distinctive black and white stripes on broad wings, and a thin upcurved bill.  I viewed this pair when the water level was low on November 5, 2004.
